Water Bottles

Americans consumed 13.7 billion gallons of bottled water in 2017 - more than any other beverage by volume - boosting an industry worth $18.5 billion. [8] 67.3% of bottled water sold in the United States is in single-serve plastic bottles. [42] 70% of those plastic water bottles are not recycled. [1] Globally, about 20,000 plastic bottles are bought every second, the majority of which contain drinking water. [49]

In 2013, Concord, MA, became the first US city to ban single-serve plastic water bottles, citing environmental and waste concerns. [44] Since then, many cities, colleges, entertainment venues, and national parks have followed suit, including San Francisco, the University of Vermont, the Detroit Zoo, and the Grand Canyon National Park. [17] [26]

Using a different material to make water bottles would be a huge set back to the companies creating the water bottles. it would be an economic set back, and would be a time consuming process to have every company come up with a new solution to the ban on plastic water bottles. It would be a more sensible to come up with a biodegradable plastic, that is better for the earth and solves the harm that the plastic is creating.

It would be an economic set back to find and use the technology to find a way to make a biodegradable plastic. The amount of research and time that would go into trying to find a way to make a safe plastic would take way too long and by the time we find a way to do this there would already be so much damage to the environment to be reversed.

It would not be an economic set back to come up with a new way to make biodegradable plastic because it would open many jobs and opportunities for engineers. This would be a step forward in the economic world, we are creating new jobs while finding a safe way to eliminate used plastic safely.

Because it's time consuming, we shouldn't do it? The earth isn't worth the time it takes to create new water bottles? When dolphins and other beautiful sea creatures die in our oceans because of the vast pollution, then I guess it's okay because it would take too much time. Sorry, Flipper.

Not all plastic ends up in the seas. It’s not always the plastic bottles company fault that plastic is being put in the water, it is the consumers that play a big part in pollution. To save your “beautiful sea creatures” you should be finding ways to make people recycle and not just crack down on companies for all the damage that occurs.

If a person would get rid of all the water bottles we would still have pollution, we still would have plastic bags, plastic wrappers, ext. Getting rid of one problem could just give us another problem like if factories start producing biodegradable watter bottles we would be causing air pollution.

Water bottles would be the first step, with the ultimate goal to rid harmful plastics. And there’s already air pollution being produced with the making of plastic bottles, so by replacing the plastic with a more biodegradable option, we wouldn’t be producing more air pollution.

Plastic water bottles should be banned due to the fact that they are causing a large amount of pollution in the world, and cutting them out would be a step in the right direction. Plastic water bottles are also shown to have toxins in them which are shown to harm the human body in the long run.

Water bottles are not the only plastic that is causing harm, so to make a change that would have more of an effect you would have to make every company stop using plastic. It would be unfair to single out and only have water bottles change from plastic to another material, setting them back in the market industry.

Yes, its true that water bottle plastics are not the only plastic harming the earth, but by eradicating plastic water bottles from the environment, that would be a huge step in the right direction for getting rid of pollutants in the water. Think of the straws for example, we are trying to use less plastic straws, and that’s already making an impact by opening peoples eyes to the amount of pollution truly out there in the environment.

So, anything that causes harm to the human body should be banned? Well, goodbye Big Mac... goodbye Coke... goodbye French fries. You aren't healthy. Pollutants need to go... You're right. I guess we are going to stop making anything of plastic. Wow. The world just go a whole lot worse, didn't it?

When you consume a Big Mac, a coke, or French fries, you are aware of the nutritional value of those food items and how they are harmful to the body, while most people don’t know that there are chemicals in the plastic that can actually cause damage to their body. And the making of plastic wont completely stop immediately, its just water bottles are the first step in that process, and the final goal is to find a safe biodegradable alternative to harmful plastics.

Water bottles are destroying the earth and it’s habitants. The plastic that is used to make them is filling landfills and filling up the oceans. Save the turtles.

Isn't everything destroying the environment. Apparently cow farts are causing holes in the atmosphere. So, by your logic, we should get rid of cows and anything that can send gas into the atmosphere. We are destroying the earth every day. I guess we are the first things that should go.

Yes there are a lot of other factors that are destroying the environment, but by cutting out the plastic bottles, it would be a step in the right direction to becoming more environmental friendly. Also just because cows are causing holes in the atmosphere doesn’t mean that we should get rid of them. They provide us with so much more than just destroying the atmosphere such as: essential nutrients for humans to survive, calcium and vitamins.

I believe that all plastic water bottles should be banned. It would be a really good start to a huge pollution problem our world is having. If we all use reusable water bottles instead of plastic, one-time-use bottles, we would be living in a cleaner world. Obviously our planet wouldn’t be completely restored by any means, but by taking this first step we could be preventing potential extinctions and have cleaner air. Getting rid of plastic water bottles will aid in reducing our waste in oceans as well. Plastic waste is one of the largest contributors to the pollution in our oceans and lakes. I firmly believe that banning plastic bottles will better our environment

You're right the oceans are in trouble. The vast amount of water bottles in them is disgusting. BUT isn't there also quite a bit of other pollution as well? Do we get rid of anything that has been thrown in the ocean? We will have nothing left. Water bottles can be reused, and they are easier the transport than a reusable water bottle. We need to think about the consequences before just jumping on the bandwagon.

Yes, there is other waste products in our oceans. But by Getting rid of just one thing, such as water bottles, we would be reducing pollution significantly. Even if it is just one product. They may be easier for transport but it would be easier to just keep track of one water bottle and refill it than to buy a new water bottle every time your thirsty just to through it away once your done.

There has been a misunderstanding on the idea that bottled water is better and cleaner than tap water. The reality behind it is wrong. Tap water is maintained under very strict rules than bottled water. This makes it even safer to use tap water than bottled water. If people could understand this then there would be no use of plastic water bottles and should then be banned. People would use reusable containers and bottled and drastically reduce wasteful plastic.
